Description

'Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.'

In 'She Walks in Beauty', Lord Byron describes a beautiful young woman in a mourning dress. Our lesson plan looks at Byron's use of personification, similes and other writing tools, and ends with students comparing the poem to a speech by Romeo about his beloved Juliet.

Lord Byron was, in more ways than one, a Napoleonic figure; a titan of the Romantic movement; and a hero and villain, the latter especially true for many dozens of women. In 'She Walks in Beauty' he characteristically wonders at the beauty of a young woman despite the fact that she was wearing a mourning dress at the moment they met.
