Description

'O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms,
Alone and palely loitering?'

'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' is one of John Keats's most famous and enigmatic poems. In this lesson plan, students learn about Keats's life and the context in which he wrote the poem, and then use this information to interpret the ballad.

John Keats is one of the foremost figures of the Romantic movement, despite dying at the age of just 25. As students learn in this lesson plan, Keats experienced a great deal of turmoil and tragedy in his brief life, some of which may be reflected in the simple ballad 'La Belle Dame Sans Merci'.
