Description

'As I went down to Dymchurch Wall,
I heard the South sing o'er the land
I saw the yellow sunlight fall
On knolls where Norman churches stand.'

In this simple and beautiful poem, the troubled Victorian poet John Davidson describes a walk at sunset in the eponymous Kentish marsh of wind, water and Norman churches.

Our free lesson plan looks at the Christian reverence with which Davidson describes Romney Marsh, how he supplements this with other language, and the possible significance of setting the poem at dusk.
