What Are Kids Reading? What Kids Are Reading is an independent study written by Keith Topping, Professor of Education and Social Research at Dundee University.

It is published annually by Renaissance Learning.

Top Authors.pngAs part of the What Kids Are Reading report, Renaissance Learning have compiled all the data taken from the schools who participate in their Accelerated Reader scheme. Within this you can see which books the children have voted for as their favourites. They have the option to rate the books in four ways: One of the best books I have ever read; A very good book; An OK book and Not a good book. These were then used to create an average book rating.

To see the whole report go to What Kids Are Reading where you can download it and get full details year by year.

Accelerated Reader [AR] produces an average of two years' reading age growth in just one academic year while promoting reading for pleasure.

AR is a powerful tool for monitoring and managing independent reading practice. With AR, teachers can create a reading programme to meet the needs of every student.

Using information generated by software, teachers can help students select books that are difficult enough to keep them challenged, but not too difficult to cause frustration. In addition, it helps teachers to monitor students' vocabulary growth, literacy skills development and reading skills taught through other reading schemes.

What books are children enjoying the most?

From the data in the What Kids Are Reading report we have compiled the top books as voted for by the children themselves. Click below to see them now.
