    The new National Curriculum in England
    Religious Studies Key Stages 1-2

    Section 2.3 of the new National Curriculum in England framework document states:

    All state schools are also required to make provision for a daily act of collective worship and must teach religious education to pupils at every key stage and sex and relationship education to pupils in secondary education.

    Perhaps somewhat confusingly, though, Religious Studies, like PSHE, is not a statutory subject. This may be one reason why, according to a report by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Religious Education, teachers in 40% of schools surveyed expressed concern about inadequate professional development to help deliver an effective RE programme of study.
