Curriculum Vital

Year 3 Rocks: Rocks and Fossils

The new primary curriculum requires that pupils learn about basic geology in science lessons while geography lessons have a strong focus on human geography. In this lesson, pupils discuss the simple properties of rocks and learn how fossils are formed. Pupils are encouraged to investigate rocks in the local environment and record what they find. This lesson may be followed by Rocks: Different Soils.

    Pupils will learn:

    • How to compare different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and properties.
    • Fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock.
