This lesson, which uses material from the new KS2 science curriculum, provides an overview of life cycles in different types of animals. Pupils will look at local wildlife and do some research of their own into life cycles. This lesson may be followed by Living things and their habitats: Reproduction.

    Pupils will learn:

    • About the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian an insect and a bird.

There are a number of other activities which would enrich learning about life cycles but cannot be contained within one lesson. Eye-opening documentaries about life and life cycles include David Attenborough's Life on Earth. Pupils may visit a hatchery or farm, or keep frogspawn or caterpillars in the classroom and watch for themselves the changes that the animals undergo over several weeks.
