Curriculum Vital

Year 2 Fractions: Fractions as numbers

The new primary curriculum for mathematics requires more content to be taught in primary school, with fractions introduced in Year 1. In Year 2, pupils start to use fractions more mathematically. In this lesson, pupils use number lines to understand that fractions are numbers and that they can be larger than 1. This is the final lesson in a series of Year 2 lessons on fractions and should be preceded by: Fractions: Unit FractionsFractions: Other simple fractions and Fractions: Fractions of quantities.

    Pupils will learn:

    • Fractions are numbers which can be counted
    • Fractions can be larger than 1
