Year 3 Forces and Magnets: Contact and non-contact forces

    Parachute

The new KS2 science curriculum requires pupils to begin learning about forces in Year 3. In this lesson, pupils learn that 'pushes and pulls' are measurable forces which can cause objects to move. Through an experiment, they measure the forces required to drag objects up slopes with different surfaces. Pupils are also taught that some forces, such as magnetism, can work without content between objects. This lesson may be followed by Forces and Magnets: Magnets.

    Pupils will learn:

    • Forces can be used to make objects move
    • Forces can be measured using a Newton metre
    • Some forces need contact but the magnetic force does not
