Year 6 Evolution and inheritance: Inheritance

    Leopon

'Evolution and inheritance' is a recent addition to the KS2 national curriculum. While pupils are not expected to use technical vocabulary (such as 'genes' and 'chromosomes'), they should learn about inheritance, variation and adaptation over time, as illustrated by fossil records. In this lesson, pupils are introduced to the concept of inheritance and variation. This lesson may be followed by Evolution and Inheritance: Natural Selection.

    Pupils will learn:

    • Living things produce offspring who are similar but not identical
    • Characteristics are passed from parents to offspring; this is inheritance
