Year 5 Earth and Space: Day and night

In Year 5, pupils learn for the first time about what exists beyond our planet. In this lesson, pupils build on what they have learnt about the movement of bodies in the solar system. They learn about day and night and the illusion of the Sun's movement during the day, using a globe and torch to demonstrate these phenomena. This lesson may be preceded by Earth and Space: The Solar System.

    Pupils will learn:

    • How Earth’s rotations cause day and night
    • How Earth’s rotations explain the apparent movement of the Sun
