Curriculum Vital

Year 1 Animals, including humans: Pets and other animals

While the new primary science curriculum has reduced the focus on animals (with topics such as 'Caring for animals' being axed), pupils are expected to  take a scientific approach to learning about animals. In this lesson, pupils watch animated films to help learn the common names of some animals, discover how they are grouped and come up with their own methods for grouping animals. This lesson may be followed by Animals, including humans: What do animals eat?Animals, including humans: Basic body parts and Animals, including humans: Five senses.

    Pupils will learn:

    • To identify and name common animals.
    • To describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals.

Ask the pupils to bring in soft toys and figurines of different animals in preparation for the lesson.
