Core Content

Below are a few of the key points from the latest government documents about AS and A Level Modern Languages.

  • AS and A Level specifications in modern languages must build on knowledge, understanding and skills specified in the GCSE subject content.
  • Students will develop knowledge and understanding on aspects of society and culture, and history of the country/countries where the language is spoken. Students will study one theme at AS and two themes at A Level from each of the following interest areas:
    • Social issues and phenomena
    • Politics, current affairs and history
    • Intellectual culture, past and present.
  • Develop skills to use language spontaneously, and be able to adapt to communicating with different audiences.
  • Students must be able to respond to a variety of unseen texts and summarise information from spoken and written sources.
