Description

'There is a change—and I am poor;
Your love hath been, nor long ago,
A fountain at my fond heart's door'

In 'A Complaint', William Wordsworth considers the nature of love when it is withdrawn unexpectedly. As we show in our lesson plan, his comparison of love to water is highly effective. We also ask students to consider what the title of the poem is before revealing it at the end.

In this brief lesson plan, students consider the forms water can take before reading the poem. Students then list the positive and negative language and consider what it means that the love the narrator thought he had been given was only at the door of his heart.
